OSU to host global horticulture conference
STILLWATER, Okla. – Gardening enthusiasts who are interested in learning more about horticulture from around the world can do so without having to stamp their passports.
Oklahoma State University will host the first-ever Global Horticulture Conference Dec. 2, said Mike Schnelle, OSU Cooperative Extension ornamental floriculture specialist. The event will take place in the Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Products Center on the OSU campus.
“This focused conference will address horticultural topics of interest from multiple continents. The goal is to expose participants to horticultural practices and crops from around the world,” Schnelle said. “We have a diverse group of professionals who will share their expertise during a wide variety of breakout sessions.”
Early registration is $75 and must be postmarked by Nov. 21. Oklahoma Botanical Garden and Arboretum members, Master Gardeners and OSU Cooperative Extension educators may register for $50. After Nov. 21 registration is $125 and no discounted rates will be offered. Lunch is included with registration. The conference is limited to 90 participants. The conference will begin with an overview of the global community. Specialists will then present information regarding crop production of Guyana, South Korean horticulture, horticultural interests in Australia, agricultural industries in Costa Rica, fruits and vegetables from around the world, Japanese horticulture, an overview of horticulture in Nepal, horticulture by the Caspian Sea, as well as horticultural activities in India.
Barbara Brown, OSU Cooperative Extension food specialist, will be on hand to present a food demonstration.
“I’m really excited about this conference. It’s the first time we’ve pulled all of these specialists together to present world-wide horticulture topics,” Schnelle said. “It’s a great opportunity to learn about ornamental and edible crops, as well as cultural aspects of any given country addressed in the conference.”
